The Lobster — a century of seafood above the pier
Some restaurants earn their view; The Lobster inherited a hundred years of it. Perched at the entrance to the Santa Monica Pier, this glass-walled seafood house has watched the Pacific since the days when it was a humble fish shack — and it still builds its menu around the animal on the sign, cooked simply and served with the ocean filling every window.
The story
The original Lobster opened in 1923 as a tiny fish market and seafood stand beloved by locals. In the 1950s, dishwasher-turned-owner Mateo Castillo made it a proper seafood diner; the doors closed in 1985, and in the summer of 1999 the name was reborn as the modern glass pavilion that stands today — a rare thread of continuity on a boardwalk that reinvents itself every decade.
What to order
Lobster, unsurprisingly: Maine lobster steamed, grilled or butter-poached, and — when the season allows — local Pacific spiny lobster, the house point of pride. The pan-seared crab cakes with avocado purée and shaved-fennel salad are the strongest starter, the clam chowder is a reliable classic, and a chilled shellfish platter at a window table at sunset is the full Santa Monica experience.
The space
A bright, modern dining room wrapped in floor-to-ceiling glass, hovering just above the pier entrance: Ferris wheel to one side, open Pacific to the other. Time your reservation to golden hour and the room turns amber as surfers catch last waves below — few dining rooms in LA stage a sunset this well.
Who it’s for
Visitors capping a Santa Monica day, celebration dinners that want ocean instead of skyline, seafood classicists — and anyone who accepts that here the view shares equal billing with the plate.
Frequently asked questions
When should I book? For sunset, reserve well ahead and aim about an hour before it starts; lunch is easier and the view is just as wide.
Maine or spiny lobster? Maine is the year-round staple; Pacific spiny is the local seasonal specialty — ask what came in.
Can I request a window table? Requests are noted rather than guaranteed — arriving early and dining off-peak improves your odds considerably.
Is it touristy? The location guarantees a crowd, yes — but the raw bar, chowder and lobster program are taken seriously all the same.
Is there a dress code? No — beach-day casual and dressed-up birthday tables coexist happily in the same room.
