Expert Insights

“These numbers tell an important story about regional safety patterns across America,” a spokesperson from Omega Law commented. “Economic conditions, population density, and law enforcement resources all play a role in shaping residential crime rates.

The five-fold difference between the highest and lowest states clearly shows that location is a major factor in determining the risks homeowners face.”

The spokesperson added: “Even in states with lower crime rates, residents should still take basic precautions to protect their homes. Researching local crime statistics is the first step toward making informed decisions about home security.”

Methodology

Data on residential crimes was sourced from the FBI Crime Data Explorer. Figures were calculated per 100,000 residents, based on each state’s population participation numbers. States were then ranked from most to least dangerous for residential crime.
