Biography

Brian Hugh Warner was born on January 5, 1969, in Canton, Ohio. Brian was an only child. His father was a furniture salesman, and his mother was a nurse. As a child, he was educated at a Christian school. This experience is what shaped his critical view of religion. After the 10th grade, he transferred to a public school, Cardinal Gibbons High School, in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. After high school, Brian found a job at a music magazine, working as a journalist and music critic.

In 1990, he formed the band “Marilyn Manson & the Spooky Kids,” but later shortened the name to “Marilyn Manson.” Warner’s stage name is a combination of the names of two iconic figures in American culture: Marilyn Monroe (the personification of beauty and fame) and Charles Manson (the infamous serial killer). Manson also calls himself a “mom’s son.” He owns a t-shirt that says “Kill Your Parents” but insists it’s just sarcasm. In reality, his parents never mistreated him and have supported all of his endeavors.

The singer is also an avid painter. He debuted as a controversial artist in 2002. At his art exhibition “The Golden Age of Grotesque,” one of his works, depicting a hermaphroditic Hitler, was valued at $55,000. The musician admits that he feels fear every time his work is put on display. Manson’s paintings have been exhibited in Los Angeles, Miami, Athens, Paris, Berlin, and Vienna. Marilyn himself has held over 10 exhibitions of his paintings worldwide. In 2006, he opened his own gallery, “The Celebritarian Corporation Gallery of Fine Art.” The price of his paintings ranges from $1,500 to $50,000.

On February 4, 1998, Marilyn Manson’s book “The Long Hard Road Out of Hell” was released. In it, the author writes about his childhood and subsequent life events.

The artist’s personal life is filled with interesting adventures. Throughout his career, he has not hidden his attraction to various women. Manson has always been surrounded by beautiful women. His relationship with Rose McGowan was supposed to end in marriage, but the couple decided to split. He was also in a relationship with Evan Rachel Wood. It was a very passionate relationship. They even got engaged, but they broke up in 2010. He also had relationships with adult film actress Stoya and CariDee English. In 2005, the singer married Dita Von Teese. However, they divorced just a year later. She stated that Manson had been unfaithful. In 2020, he married Lindsay Usich.

Music Career

Early in their music career, the rock group was the opening act for the industrial band “Nine Inch Nails.” Trent Reznor helped them develop. It was his idea to focus on an unconventional appearance. Their first performances featured unusual looks. He helped them record their debut album, “Portrait of an American Family” (1994). However, true success came with the second album, “Antichrist Superstar” (1996). It combined industrial metal, gothic rock, and theatrical performance. Songs like “The Beautiful People” became counter-culture anthems, and Manson himself became a target for criticism from religious groups and politicians. The public was shocked by Manson’s appearance and behavior. In turn, the musician supported this image with outrageous antics. The band’s logo was quite distinctive. It featured a horror-movie-style font, the gentle gaze of Monroe, and the crazed look of the killer Charles Manson. The musicians would perform in skirts, bras, and wigs. They did everything for a spectacular stage show.

The next album, “Mechanical Animals,” showed a change in style with a more electronic sound. The third album was recorded in a glam-rock style and was released in 1998. In the US, it went platinum in its first week and topped the charts in America, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, and Norway. Hits included songs like “The Dope Show,” “I Don’t Like the Drugs,” and “Rock Is Dead.” The band’s popularity was solidified by the next two records, “Holy Wood” and “The Golden Age of Grotesque.” These albums went gold and hit the top of global charts. One of the songs from the “Holy Wood” album, “Tainted Love,” held top positions in the ratings for over 22 weeks. The band has been nominated for a Grammy Award four times.

To maintain their popularity, the band released the albums “Holy Wood” and “The Golden Age of Grotesque” between 2000 and 2003. Sales exceeded 1 million copies.

In 2020, their 11th studio album was released. The record was titled “We Are Chaos.” The collection was warmly received by music lovers in various corners of the world. The band’s image and musical style change almost beyond recognition from one album to the next. Although elements of different styles are present in Marilyn Manson’s music, the band’s work as a whole does not fit neatly into any single musical category.

The Artist’s Scandals

Manson became a symbol of rebellion, which drew serious criticism. He was accused of promoting violence and Satanism, having a negative influence on youth, and being linked to the Columbine High School tragedy, although there was no evidence of this. His concerts were repeatedly banned in the US and Europe, and activists staged protests. Manson responded by stating that he only reflects reality in his music, rather than provoking violence.

The release of his second album was fraught with scandals. The album received a lot of negative feedback from Christian communities. Leaders of Christian groups condemned the musicians’ work and called on the government to shut down the band. The use of satanic attributes, the anarchist image, and the “sounds” of death in their compositions were the last straw for Christian community leaders.

In 2021, several women, including actress Evan Rachel Wood, accused Manson of sexual and psychological abuse. This led to a wave of investigations, terminated contracts, and a loss of support from the industry. Manson himself denies all allegations and claims it is part of “cancel culture.”

Despite the controversy, Marilyn Manson has left a significant mark on music and pop culture. His style, provocations, and conceptual albums have influenced countless artists, from “Slipknot” to Lady Gaga. You can love or hate his work, but it’s impossible to deny that he changed the alternative scene and made it bolder and more provocative.

Acting Career

Marilyn Manson made his film debut in David Lynch’s “Lost Highway.” A year later, the musician appeared in the film “Jawbreaker.” And in 2003, he appeared in Asia Argento’s film “The Heart Is Deceitful Above All Things.” In 2007, Manson landed the role of a bartender in the movie “Rise: Blood Hunter.”

The musician also worked on his own film project. In 2011, the movie “Splatter Sisters” was announced. Manson was set to star in it alongside his then-girlfriend Evan Rachel Wood. In 2013, the musician appeared in an episode of his favorite series, “Californication.”
