Biography
Jack was born on April 22, 1937 in the town of Neptune. Among Jack’s ancestors were Dutch, Irish and Italian. Since childhood, the boy was raised by his grandmother, Ethel May Rhoads, and grandfather, John Nicholson. They decided to look after Jack so that his mother June Frances could continue her career as a dancer. Only at the age of 37 the actor learned that those whom he called his parents were actually his grandparents. He considered his own mother to be his sister.
After graduating from school, Jack got a job at the MGM film studio. He took acting courses there. Jack debuted in the low-budget film The Cry Baby Killer in 1958. In the film, he played a teenager who thought that he had committed murder. Throughout the next decade, he continued to act in low-budget horrors. After a small role in the dark comedy The Little Shop of Horrors (1960), he appeared in The Terror (1963), Back Door to Hell (1964), Flight to Fury (1965) and The Shooting (1966).
The actor’s popularity was brought by the movie Easy Rider, which was released in 1969. This role brought nominations for the most prestigious cinema awards. A year later, he consolidated his success. For the film Five Easy Pieces, he was again nominated for these awards as Best Actor. By 1975, he managed to get the desired prize. Thanks to the film One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest, he became the owner of an Academy Award. This film was based on Ken Kesey’s novel. It tells the story of a prisoner who is placed in a psychiatric hospital, where doctors try to suppress his rebellious spirit. He played one of his most famous roles in the 1974 film Chinatown directed by Roman Polanski. He played private detective Jake Gittes, who was assigned to investigate a murder. This role brought his fourth Academy Award nomination. However, he did not win it.
During the 1980s, he experimented with creativity. He appeared on the screen in roles that were unusual for him. He played several brilliant roles. He appeared as Eugene O’Neill in the film Reds (1981), as well as in Terms of Endearment (1983), for which he won another Academy Award, and as The Joker in The Batman (1989). His best form was observed in the 1990s, with roles in A Few Good Men (1992) and As Good as It Gets (1997). End of acting career
In 2013, reports began to appear that he was leaving his acting career at the age of 76. The media wrote that the legendary actor had memory problems and could no longer remember the lines that were required of him. There were no official comments on this subject. His last work was the romantic comedy How Do You Know (2010).
