Kiefer was born in London. His parents are famous actors Donald Sutherland and Shirley Douglas. They are Scottish by origin. After the birth of their son, they decided to move to Los Angeles and live a happy family life there. However, not everything went smoothly. In 1970, his parents divorced. For another 5 years, he and his mother remained in Los Angeles. Then, they moved to Toronto. There, he attended high school and a number of colleges in Ontario.
Kiefer began his acting career in 1983. While living in Canada, he received his first film role in a comedy drama. His first major role was in the Canadian drama The Bay Boy.
