However, the situation began to change in the early 20th century. Thomas Edison, who held numerous patents on motion picture technology, controlled many of the studios on the East Coast. Filmmakers looking to escape his monopoly began searching for new places to shoot. California became one of those places.

Moviemakers chose Los Angeles for several key reasons:

Climate: The city had mild, sunny weather year-round, allowing for filming without long interruptions.

Diverse Locations: Within a few hours’ drive, you could find the ocean, mountains, deserts, meadows, and cityscapes.

Cheap Land and Labor: Unlike New York, land in Los Angeles was relatively inexpensive, allowing studios to build their own backlots.

Distance from Edison’s Patent Monopoly: The West Coast was far enough away to avoid legal persecution from his company.

The Birth of Hollywood

Filmmaking began in Los Angeles in 1907, and in Hollywood specifically in 1913. The first film that kicked off Hollywood’s story was Cecil B. DeMille’s Western, The Squaw Man. The first studio to start filming in Los Angeles was the Nestor Film Company in 1911, which established its first film studio on Sunset Boulevard. Soon, major companies like Paramount Pictures, Warner Bros., Universal Pictures, and 20th Century Fox followed. By 1920, thanks to the rapid growth of several major studios and the emergence of the studio system, around 800 films were being shot here annually. The name itself became a symbol of luxury, the “sweet life,” and the illusory magic of cinema. In just 15 years, a modest village transformed into the capital of America’s film industry, concentrating about 90% of all American film studios. This era also saw the rise of the first movie stars, like Charlie Chaplin, Mary Pickford, and Douglas Fairbanks. They not only starred in films but also created their own studios. Fueled by rapid technological advancements and high demand, massive studio complexes were built. By the mid-1930s, Los Angeles had definitively become the center of the global film industry.

The First Films

The first cinematic works were silent films, lacking a synchronized soundtrack. The only audio accompaniment was music performed by a live pianist or a small orchestra. Audiences read dialogue and key plot points from intertitles spliced into the film reel. Early film production was clearly divided into three main genres: comedies, melodramas where heroes suffered for love while the audience wept in sympathy, and adventure films where the hero easily overcame hardships and enemies.

In 1927, Alan Crosland’s film The Jazz Singer ushered in the era of sound cinema.

The Great Depression actually served as a catalyst for cinema’s boom. In times of hardship, people needed joy, humor, and vibrant emotions. The melodrama became a hugely popular genre. A brilliant example is the 1939 adaptation of Gone with the Wind, starring Vivien Leigh and Clark Gable. It became one of the highest-grossing films in American history, earning $100 million at the box office, and won eight Oscars.

The late 1920s saw the rise of not only feature films and animation but also documentary cinema. Robert Flaherty is considered the founder of American documentary filmmaking. The director worked with non-professional actors, showing the life of an ordinary Inuit family and their struggle against the elements and life’s hardships. The Western is a uniquely American genre. The plots are often straightforward: “good guys” fight “bad guys” and win. Clint Eastwood is famous as both an actor and director in the Western genre, particularly in the latter half of the 20th century.

Legendary Hollywood

In the 1920s-1940s, Hollywood became synonymous with cinema. Legendary directors like Alfred Hitchcock, Orson Welles, and Billy Wilder worked here. Iconic actors emerged, including Marlene Dietrich, Humphrey Bogart, and Katharine Hepburn.
