In 1942, following the signing of Executive Order 9066, the Takei family was forced to live in converted horse stalls at Santa Anita Park before being sent to an internment camp in Arkansas, where Japanese American families were held under close watch. Although George’s childhood was marked by these difficult circumstances, he demonstrated leadership qualities and became active in his community. He attended Mount Vernon Junior High School and later served as president of the boys’ senior board at his high school.

After graduating from high school, George Takei enrolled at the University of California, Berkeley, where he initially studied architecture. He later transferred to the University of California, Los Angeles, where he earned a Bachelor of Arts in theater in 1960 and a Master of Arts in 1964.

To further hone his craft, Takei studied at the Shakespeare Institute in England and Sophia University in Japan. In Hollywood, he took acting courses at the Desilu Workshop, allowing him to blend his academic education with the practical skills of the acting profession.

Early Career

George Takei began his Hollywood career in the late 1950s. His first jobs included dubbing dialogue for the English-language versions of Japanese monster movies such as “Rodan” (1956) and “Godzilla Raids Again” (1955). Takei also appeared in the anthology television series “Playhouse 90” and in several episodes of “Hawaiian Eye.”

He performed in the musical production “Fly Blackbird!” in the role of George, but for the Off-Broadway version, the part was initially given to another actor. Takei later returned to the role. In film and television, Takei worked alongside legendary actors such as Frank Sinatra, Richard Burton, Jeffrey Hunter, James Caan, and Cary Grant.

A notable moment in Takei’s early career was the 1964 “The Twilight Zone” episode “The Encounter,” in which he played a Japanese American landscape designer. CBS did not include the episode in syndication due to its themes of mutual hatred between the U.S. and Japan. It remained unavailable to viewers until 1992. Takei also appeared in a first-season episode of “Mission: Impossible” (1966), the comedy “Which Way to the Front?” (1970), and narrated the documentary “The Japanese Sword as the Soul of the Samurai” (1969).

“Star Trek” and Other Roles

In 1965, producer Gene Roddenberry cast the actor as astrophysicist and navigator Hikaru Sulu in the second pilot episode of the original “Star Trek” series. When NBC picked up the series, Takei continued in the role, which was changed to the starship’s helmsman.

Although there were plans to expand Sulu’s role in the second season, Takei was filming “The Green Berets” (1968) at the time, which led to him appearing in only half of that season’s episodes. Takei would reprise the role of Sulu in “Star Trek: The Animated Series” (1973–1974), the first six “Star Trek” films, various video games, and special projects such as an episode of “Star Trek: Voyager” (1996) and the fan series “Star Trek New Voyages: Phase II” (2007).

In 1979, Takei co-authored the science fiction novel “Mirror Friend, Mirror Foe” with Robert Asprin. His autobiography, “To the Stars,” was published in 1994. Later, Takei sought to bring the story of the internment of Japanese Americans during World War II to the screen.

In 2007, Takei played Kaito Nakamura in the series “Heroes,” and in 2008, he participated in the British reality show “I’m a Celebrity… Get Me Out of Here!” on ITV, where he finished in third place. In 2009, he voiced a character in “Star Wars: The Clone Wars” and appeared in the documentary short “George & Brad in Bed,” which focused on his relationship with Brad Altman.

In 2015, the musical “Allegiance” premiered on Broadway. Takei created it to shed light on the internment experience and the history of Japanese Americans during World War II. In 2019, he released his graphic memoir, “They Called Us Enemy,” which won an American Book Award in 2020.

Theater Work

He has actively collaborated with East West Players, one of the leading Asian American theaters in the United States, which has served as a vital platform for promoting the work of Asian actors and playwrights.

One of Takei’s most prominent theatrical projects is the musical “Allegiance,” which premiered in 2012. The production was based on George Takei’s own experiences and those of his family during the internment of Japanese American citizens during World War II. The musical aimed to blend historical truth with artistic interpretation, conveying the emotional and social impact of the tragedy. In 2015, “Allegiance” made its Broadway debut. While it received mixed reviews from critics, it resonated with audiences for its sincerity and the depth of its historical subject matter.

Takei’s theatrical career has always been closely intertwined with his activism. He uses the stage as a platform to address social issues such as discrimination, human rights, and historical memory. Through his involvement with East West Players, “Allegiance,” and other productions, George Takei has helped popularize Asian culture and the issues facing the Japanese American community, while also nurturing a new generation of actors.

Political Activism

In 1972, Takei served as an alternate delegate from California to the Democratic National Convention. In 1973, he ran for the Los Angeles City Council, finishing second in a special election. During this campaign, local television stations had to alter their broadcast schedules for “Star Trek” to avoid violating FCC equal-time rules for political candidates.

Los Angeles Mayor Tom Bradley later appointed the actor to the Board of Directors of the Southern California Rapid Transit District, where he was involved in planning the Los Angeles Metro system. The actor served on the board from 1973 to 1984.

In 1980, Takei launched a campaign for the California State Assembly (46th District) but later withdrew his candidacy due to controversies surrounding the broadcast of “Star Trek” during the election season and his desire not to interrupt his acting career.

Takei is known for his compelling public appearances and PSAs. In 2010, he recorded a video message condemning Clint McCance for making homophobic statements, which led to McCance’s resignation from his school board position. In 2011, Takei created a PSA in response to Tennessee legislation that restricted the use of the word “gay” in schools, humorously suggesting that his own last name be used as a substitute. In 2015, he sharply criticized Donald Trump for calling for a ban on Muslims entering the U.S., comparing it to the history of Japanese internment during World War II.

Together with his husband, Brad Altman, Takei owns the digital publication “Second Nexus,” which reports news from a progressive perspective. In the run-up to the 2024 presidential election, he openly supported Kamala Harris and criticized Donald Trump, calling him a “creator of cruel chaos.” Takei also commented on the Gaza protests and urged progressives to support Harris.

George Takei is not just an actor; he uses his fame and his voice to fight for human rights, support the LGBT+ community, combat discrimination, and actively participate in civic initiatives.
