First, students could choose to study vocals or piano. As the population grew, so did the educational institution. The school&#8217;s close association with the fledgling LA Philharmonic helped raise its profile, attracting nationally and internationally famous artists. Among them were virtuoso Alice Ehlers, composer <a href=\"https:\/\/los-angeles-trend.com\/uk\/eternal-2233-novator-u-muzychnomu-mystecztvi-kompozytor-arnold-shenberg\">Arnold Schoenberg<\/a>, Swiss composer Ingolf Dahl, cellist Gregor Piatigorsky and violinist Jasha Heifetz.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In 1999, Flora L. Thornton became the beneficiary of the school with a gift of $25 million. It was the largest contribution to an American music school at that time. The institution boasts superb faculties, highly qualified students, strong connections to the local music industry and entertainment groups and alumni who perform in concert halls around the world. During the 1910s, many professors who taught here were musicians of the local Philharmonic. In addition to one-on-one instruction, their students benefited from hearing their professors in concert. Every year, the school bought part of the seats for the Philharmonic concerts. In the fall of 1934, composer Arnold Schoenberg moved with his family to Hollywood and tried to attract students among local film composers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It was founded in 1884. Since then, the institution has become a center of higher education in music. It is listed among the top five music schools in the US. Located in the heart of the LA musical life, the school unites outstanding teachers and gifted students from all over the world. In this amazingly diverse cultural environment, students are offered training in nearly every professional and academic branch of music, including instrumental and vocal performance, jazz, composition, conducting, film recording, music industry and education, recording arts, pedagogy, choral and church music, conducting and opera. In addition to its core programs, there is a wide range of general interest courses for those majoring in other disciplines.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Numerous concerts are given on campus each year. Acceptance letters are issued by the Admissions Office of the educational institution. An in-person audition or a recent video recording is required.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>General Graduate Exam (GRE) scores are required for admission to the Master of Arts, Doctor of Music and Ph.D. Achievement tests in basic musical skills and areas of study are required. A list of required exams for each specialty can be obtained from the Admissions Office. Exam dates are announced each semester in the class schedule.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>All programs for all degrees require skill in performance. This is achieved through individualized instruction in areas that best match the student&#8217;s abilities and interests. Piano proficiency is required in all study programs. Attending concerts in the student&#8217;s major is a regular part of applied music work for all majors. Bachelor of Music students have a wide range of specializations, such as composition, electroacoustic media, music education and industry, instrumental and vocal performance. Students can complete either a single major program or double major in several combinations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A Master of Music degree allows you to specialize in several areas. A degree can be earned in choral music, church music, composition, music education, keyboard ensemble, guitar, harpsichord, jazz studies, organ, voice, piano and instrumental performance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Doctor of Musical Arts, D.M.A., is the highest professional degree offered here. Students may specialize in choral music, church music, composition, education, vocal or instrumental performance. Doctor of Philosophy is an academic degree in the field of historical musicology or music theory. It belongs to the Arts &amp; Humanities and Graduate Research Interdisciplinary Center and is located on the first floor of the Doheny Memorial Library.
