A significant part of the inspiration for the interior design of the theater was inspired by the grandeur of King Francis I of France. Back then, when the Orpheum, a brand new theater, opened its doors in downtown Los Angeles, the city’s population was just over 300,000. Less than one-tenth of the residents owned cars. Hollywood was still a small village. It would be a few more years before D.W. Griffith directed his groundbreaking film, Birth of a Nation and Charlie Chaplin, a British vaudeville artist, had yet to make his mark in the world of cinema.

Among the popular nightlife entertainments, vaudeville took precedence and the Orpheum Theater was specifically built to showcase it. The architect, G. Albert Lansburgh, designed it to resemble a Florentine early Renaissance palazzo, making it the first vaudeville theater built in Los Angeles by the renowned Orpheum chain. Boasting three levels of seating and close to two thousand seats, the theater was intended to awe audiences and it certainly succeeded.

The Orpheum was constructed on Broadway in the heart of downtown Los Angeles, which was considered the primary commercial street in the city during that period. It served as a popular destination for shopping, dining, dancing and entertainment. While two other vaudeville theaters, the Cameo and the Arcade, had opened on Broadway the previous year, the Orpheum quickly became the trendy new hotspot when it opened in June 1911.

Since its opening, the theater has been the heart of vaudeville shows in Los Angeles. The Orpheum Theater boasts six levels of dressing rooms, a movie projector, a top-notch sound system and one of the few remaining theater organs in the nation. Back in the day, it was the ultimate spot to catch Hollywood’s biggest stars during the era of live variety shows. Legendary performers like Lena Horne, Sammy Davis Jr., Ella Fitzgerald and Judy Garland, who first came to prominence at the Orpheum under her real name, Francis Gumm, graced its stage.

UNIQUE ORGAN AND SILENT FILM SCORING

When movies took over as the main form of entertainment, the Orpheum Theater adapted. In 1928, they installed a 13-rank, three-manual Wurlitzer organ inside the theater to accompany silent films. The organ, with its metal and wooden pipes seamlessly integrated into the gilded walls, was capable of producing approximately 1,500 orchestral sounds, such as car horns, thunder, animal noises and gunshots.

Steve Needleman, the proprietor of the Orpheum Theater, expressed immense pride in the theater’s organ. ‘It’s a very unique instrument to personally own; I just wish that I had the talent to play it myself!’ he remarked. Needleman added, ‘We’ve been lucky enough to have a couple of nationally renowned organists perform here during our special silent film performances.’

Despite the rise of sound in films and the popularity of TV, audiences continued to flock to the theater. Legendary musicians like Aretha Franklin, Little Richard and Stevie Wonder graced the stage during the ’60s. When the organ started deteriorating, Eugene F. Davis spearheaded a restoration project, enlisting the support of a dedicated team of volunteers. The team’s efforts included replacing all pipe connections and restoring the instrument’s rich, harmonious tone.

Needleman noted that the Orpheum Theater is among the few remaining independent music venues in Los Angeles. The theater is known for its live performances, having hosted legendary acts like Bob Hope and Jack Benny, along with Maroon 5, Van Morrison, and The Beach Boys. The venue offers great entertainment with a nostalgic atmosphere.

Since opening on February 15, 1926, the Orpheum Theater has hosted a lot of big names in show business, from burlesque queen Sally Rand to young Judy Garland and comedian Jack Benny to jazz performers like Lena Horne, Ella Fitzgerald and Duke Ellington.
