The members of the Christian theatre company aim to develop not only professionally and personally but also spiritually. Essentially, they aspire to become messengers of Christ’s hope, spreading His message through their performances.

It all started in 1987. Then, two years later, Crossley Theatre opened its doors, followed by David Schall Theatre (formerly Crossley Theatre) in 1995. This location was where Actors Co-op put on more than a hundred shows on the main stage, followed by an additional 40 on the second stage.

DAVID SCHALL

David Schall was a native of Ford City, Pennsylvania. He graduated from Indiana University, majoring in political science and psychology. At one time, David Schall pursued a career in politics and public service, but in the fall of 1976, he left it all behind and moved to New York City to pursue his childhood dream. He studied at several acting studios and starred in various productions, dramas, commercials and films.

In 1981, David Schall established the Actors Fellowship at Marble Collegiate Church in Manhattan. To better serve the growing needs of the fellowship, he pursued his studies at seminaries for three years. During this period, he faced a crucial decision: to prioritize either his faith or his passion for acting.

ESTABLISHMENT OF ACTORS CO-OP

David Schall became a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Hollywood in 1986 and played a crucial role in establishing Actors Co-op. He served on the company’s board for seven years and also directed and produced for the first five seasons.

Although David Schall passed away in 2003, he earned fame as an actor and producer, performing on stage and television. After establishing the Christian theatre company, he went on to create other creative groups such as Inter-Mission, Act One: Writing for Hollywood, and Hollywood 101.

His fans remembered his role in the TV series ER, where David Schall played a minister at a funeral. This role was the last one for him. As his friends stated, he died of a ‘heart attack in his car, right in front of his favorite place in the world — the theatre’.

THE FIRST PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH OF HOLLYWOOD (FPCH) AND THE THEATRICAL ARTS

The FPCH was established in 1903 and acquired its current site in 1908.
